He has us!
The light of our lives is Travis (Mont Blanc's Tuff Travis), out of Kenneview's Tuff Kid and Rivergroves' Pyrless Prime Time). We had a Czechoslovakian Cuvac dog, Cyril, who we had to put down at 8 1/2 becuase of a disintegrating vertebrate. We wanted to find a longer-lived dog, and at the Boston dog show in 1994 met Patty Allison of Harrison, Maine, who breeds Great Pyrenees. She was a marvelous person and said her puppies grandparents were all still alive at 12 years. We had no idea she would be breeding her bitch to the Westminster best in breed winner! We are honored to live with such a wonderful, lovely animal and love him more every day. We moved out to the country 50 miles from Boston and bought a new house with an acre of fenced yard for him. I live to take him on walks on the weekends along the quiet New England roads, to the Emu farm down the street and to the two rivers near our house, where he goes swimming (on a long lead...).

My partner Ralph Kolewe and I met our first Pyr in 1983, when we were actually looking for a Golden Retriever -- our first dog. A year and a half later, Averyhill's Rollant de Monjoie entered our lives. When he died very suddenly in Dec. 1994, even the Golden (Reveloak's Mallorn Baranduin -- a.k.a. Brando) missed him so terribly that within three weeks we had another Pyr: Woolmarsh's Enchanter Prospero. Prospero is more outgoing, relaxed, humorous, and savvy than Rollant was ; Rollo was a philosopher, dignified and introverted. Prospero has made good progress in Obedience (hoping for a CD someday), whereas Rollo's perennial tactic in Obedience class was to lie down after about five minutes, flip onto his back, and ask for a tummy-rub! As companions, Pyrs are just about perfect -- lov ing to "owners", gentle with children, affectionate with friend s, and at the same time totally protective. Now to work on that drooling......

comments : I am interested in getting Pyr. I have had dogs all my life, German Sephard, Springer Spaniel, Beagle, Mutt, but never a Pyr. Seen one on TV and really liked. I would appreciate all you could tell me. I have two small ( 6 & 9yrs old ) children. Are they good with kids? Are they good in the house? Our yard is about 35 meters by 70 meters, is this enough room. Outside temperatures here can be as cold as -15 deg C in the winter to as warm as 45 deg C. is this a problem? Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

comments : Rescued our dog from the pound, from being put to sleep. Had to be the best thing we did, he is an unbelievable dog. We also have a dalmation, who is 1000 times as excitable as the pyr, named Bear. We don't see a lot of them here, but I promise, he is one of the best dogs we have had.

comments : My husband and I are "gone to the dogs" also. We have six dogs. A German Shepherd, Musty, 5 years old, will be six on Jan. 26, 97. A greyhound, LuLu, 4 years old, will be five on Jan. 2, 97. A shepherd and doberman mix, Pepper, 3 years old on Christmas Day. The twins, Bailey and Sarah, 2 years old and the last one a pit bull, basset hound mix, Spunky, will be 2 on March 7, 1997. Our lives revolve around them. They are our kids. We couldn't imagine our lives without them. The house is always in need of cleaning, we are always in need of money, but the dogs never go without the best of foods and toys. They get more presents for Christmas then we do!! We love them all very much. "Going to the dogs" is actually the second best thing to happen to me, the first being finding a husband that had gone to the dogs also!!!
