Pyrs yes, one four year old bad boy
Got approriately named Cortez (the killer...from the Neil Young song) when he was 8 weeks.
Picked out a female first, because of the size factor, but Cortez looked up at me, put his
paw up and leaned over for a belly rub. Put the female down and took home the giant of the
litter. Won't let anyone in the house anymore even people he knows. This has been a real
problem. Only can take him to the vet. He loves the girls there. Gets along great with our
five cats... go figure. Love that dog anyway!

First time visiting this web site. We have had our puppy
since she was 10 wks old. We got her in Aiken, SC. Her
aunts and uncles are active sheepherders in Oklahoma. She is
now almost 9 mths old and is a joy. She has been the
greatest. We hope to move out west, Montana, Wyoming, or Idaho,
in the near future. Hopefully, there she can enjoy a cooler
climate.

Pyrs Yes - 2: 1 male and 1 female
*We knew nothing about Pyrs 2 years ago. My daughter had an aging Maltese and I offered to
get a puppy for her for Christmas. She looked thru the books and found Great Pyranees. We
found a breeder in the Oklahoma panhandle and arranged to go look at the puppies. Of
course, we ended up bring one home. About 4 months later, my daughter was driving thru
central Oklahoma and noticed a huge brown dog running along the interstate highway. She
stopped the car, called "here doggie" and the dog quickly jumped in her
backseat. As she had expected, it was a young Pyr.
She got off the expressway and asked in nearby homes for info regarding the owner. She was
told he was a stray and had been hanging around for a couple of weeks. She left her phone
number and brought him home. After we cleaned off the red Oklahoma mud and the mountain of
ticks, we realized he was a beautiful pure white Pyr. We finally had to shave him to get
rid of the mats and allow treatment of skin problems. I've always had dogs but this is the
first time we've ever kept a stray.
'Bernard' has been with us for a year and a half. He's gained weight and the skin problems
have disappeared. The vet estimates he's now about 3 years old.
He's turned out to be a GREAT dog. If we'd searched for the perfect dog, we could never
have found one as great as 'Bernard'.

Sophie is our 9-year old female Pyr. Most of the time she is calm, sweet and good natured,
but at times she can be mischievious and playful. It is also amazing how intelligent she
is and there are times it seems as if she understands English. We also have a 12-year old
male black dachsund and when we are out in public with both dogs, people often stop and
stare at the "odd couple", a white giant walking next to a black mini!

I am in love with my Great Pyrenees named Oso. He is a little over
2 years old, 32" or so tall, weighs over 150lbs and is the
mellowest, kindest, silliest dog I've ever known. His best buddy is
a lab/shepherd mix named Zoe. They love each other and although
Zoe is very shy with most other dogs, Oso lets her have her way,
even if he is twice her weight. I love it when he grabs his bone
and does his little backwards dance challenging me to come and get
it. He still acts like a puppy at times, yet when it comes to "his job"
of protecting us, he is on guard and ready to go, especially
when we get into bed. He usually has free roam of the house and
the yard so when he makes his rounds he huffs and puffs like he
is almost incredulous at the thought of those damn killer cats
wandering into his yard. He used to have the annoying habit of
coming to the head of the bed where all of a sudden we would
hear this heavy breathing followed by one very loud "WOOF". We
changed where we put our heads so now he sometimes does it to our
feet, but not as often. I love him and would do anything for him.

I have a rescue Bouv and a rescue Weim, also 3 rescue cats. Family extends
to four children ranging in ages from 5 to 20. All are animal lovers esp doges.
I am looking into adopting a pyr on rescue. Ihave a wonderful contact locally for this
but I am doing further research to make sure this breed, of which I am new to, will
fit our family.
What can I expect from temperment, habits, good and bad. Grooming, etc. I know that each
dog
is different but would like to know the "norm". It is important to us that the
new
pet be part of the family and not just "kenneled" out back somewhere. We do have
a fenced
yard. Oh yes, how about digging habits?? etc. ANything you can tell us would be wonderful.

I have Dobes, but am looking for a Pyr for my parents. They
are in their 70's but in good health. They live on 10
beautiful acres in Virginia. Wonderful home for a dog.
They want a housepet with some but not too much protective
instinct. Dobes too much activity/energy and they worry that
their friends will be afraid of a Dobe. They've had Bouvs
before, but last one (a rescue) became overprotective
after returning to full health and bcoming mature and
bit two people and had to be put down. So they are not
comfortable with another Bouv but miss having a dog.
I think a mature dog would be better. Rescue
would be great, even preferable, if mature and stable. But
they are willing to
purchase a retired brood bitch or a showdog that turned out
to be pet quality. Past crazy puppy hyper stage, and house-
broken if possible. Please eMail me. Thanks in advance.

In early 1996, I went to my state's annual dogs show. Among the countless breeds of dogs,
I spotted a man watching a obedience competition in the ring. Beside him was the most
beautiful dog I had ever seen. Breathless, I approached him. I inquired about this
dreamlike creature, and was told a bit about this Great Pyrenees dog. I remembered from
childhood watching the tv cartoon "Belle & Sabastian," and my strong
attraction to this story. Suddenly, I found myself coveting this gentle animal, and that
day, I set my mind on finding my own pyr. After months of searching, in Oct. of '96, I
found a beautiful litter of pyr. pups. All of these puppies were beautiful and alert, but
I especially connected with one male. He looked me right in the eye, with an intelligent
expression. This puppy became the best behaved dog I have ever owned. Al is curious but
cautious with strangers, very protective, and extremely gentle with children. Now, he is
17 months old, and I could never imagine chosing another breed again. I am thrilled with
this choice and priviledge to own the beautiful Great Pyrenees.

Pyrs Yes? Perhaps mixed with something else?
I volunteered at our Animal Shelter last year and fell in love with this big, white, very
dirty and awful-looking dog. He was so big that no one else would ever take him out for a
walk, so as you can imagine he LOVED to see me come in! He was very smart. So smart in
fact that he would know exactly when I was getting ready to take him back to the Shelter
and he would try to take control. He would body-bump me. He would jump up on me. He would
do anything in his power to keep me from taking him back. Well, he was in the Shelter for
a couple month and time was running short. Then one day a woman came in to take him home,
and I couldn't control my emotions! I looked at him and he was doing everything in his
power NOT to leave me! I finally decided that I had to find a place where we both could
live together. It was the best decision that I have ever made! I brought him to the
groomers after I formally adopted him and was very pleasantly surprised to find a VERY
good-looking, although very thin, dog under all that matted hair! I brought him to the
vet, got him immunized and checked out. I found out that he had some skin problems and a
bad case of worms, as well as a bad case of being really shy. I have this feeling that he
was badly abused before he ran away and the Animal Control people caught him. In any case,
he got better, put on quite a bit of weight and is doing just fine. He is still very
tricky when he wants his way, but we have started obedience classes and we are doing much
better. I was so excited to find your page because I had absolutely no idea what breed he
is and I was sincerely amazed to see so many dogs that look just like him! He is a great
friend to everyone and a great watch dog too. What a great combination! I do have one
question though. Does anyone have any ideas about how to train him not to bother cats? We
would like to get a cat sometime soon and I am deathly afraid that he will chase it down
and kill it. I have seen him chase, catch and eat a mouse
efore, so this shows how very fast and cunning he is! Any ideas would be VERY much
appreciated! Pat your dogs for Bear and I!

Great Site for those who want to get to know this breed better. Although I am not ready to

outdoors very much and weekend in a mountainous area. Today we received 12 inches of snow
and I was out playing in it with my neighbor's Pyr. This is a perfect dog for the northern
catskill mountains of New York state. The quesitons is what would the dog do while I was
working in an office during the week? It's an intriguing question, one that I don't have

know this too shall pass! (He ate 1/2 of a loaf of freshly
baked bread two nights ago--the "little" stinker)
He has adjusted well to our older dog, a 3 year old Golden
Retriever named Lexie. They are the best of friends and
enjoy jumping and wrestling on our children's trampoline!
(No kidding!)
Thanks for giving us this site to admire the beauty of our
BEASTS!

I used to own a male Great Pyrenees many years ago and it was wonderful. I now have a Chow
that I love, but I hope to get a Great Pyrenees puppy in the next few years.
Are there any rescue services for them like they have for Greyhounds? I would love to give
an abandoned puppy a home.

I have been a faithful owner of Golden Retriever's for years until now. We decided we
wanted a more guard like dog, with the same type of qualities as the Golden Retriever. We
have only owned "Klondike" for a few days and I must say that I'm not
disappointed. He is the sweetest thing and I'm glad we made the decision to get a Great
Pyrenees. I hope he will be a good watchdog as much as he is loving.

pyrs 1 6YR OLD MALE BARNEY
THIS IS GREAT, WAS JUST SITTING AROUN SURFING AND STARTED LOOKING UP PYRENEES. I'VE HAD
KING BERNARDO I AKA. BARNEY FOR SIX WONDERFUL YEARS.HE HAS LIVED IN TENNESSEE, DAYTONA AND
TALLAHASSEE FLORIDA AND KNOW GERMANY. I AM STATIONED HERE WITH THE ARMY. BARNEY WAS QUITE
WELL BEHAVED ON THE FLIGHT OVER BUT WHEN HE BARKED YOU COULD HEAR HIM THROUGHOUT THE PLANE
EVERYONE KIND OF WENT QUIET NOT SURE WHAT TO MAKE OF THE BARKING OBVIOUSLY COMING FROM A
LARGE BEAST. WE LIVE ON A BASE WITH ABOUT 10000 AMERICANS AND EVERYONE KNOWS BARNEY.
PEOPLE WALK UP TO THE 3 OF US AND SAY, OH HELLO BARNEY AND BARELY ACKNOWLEDGE US. HE HAS
ALWAYS BEEN A MAGNET AND HERE IS NO DIFFERENT. THE GERMANS ALL CALL HIM ICE BEAR. WE TOOK
HIM TO THE OCTOBERFEST THIS YEAR AND MUCH TO MY WIFES DELIGHT WE HAD A FLOCK OF WOMEN
AROUND US PETTING HIM AND TALKING TO ME. HE IS ALWAYS GETTING ME IN TROUBLE. HE IS A DIE
HEART FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLE FAN, AT THE OCTOBERFEST WE MET SOME GUY TALKING TRASH ABOUT
HIS FLORIDA GATORS, WELL BARNEY PROCEEDED TO GET UGLY BARKING AND GROWLING AT EVERYONE
UNTIL I CALMED HIM DOWN BY SINGING THE FLORIDA STATE FIGHT SONG. HIS TEMPER KIND OF SCARED
EVERYONE AT OUR TABLE. BUT EVERYONE FELL IN LOVE WITH HIM.
I HAVE A QUESTION: BARNEY ONLY WEIGHS ABOUT A 100 POUNDS BUT IS A GOOD 30 INCHES TALL, HOW
CAN I PUT ABOUT 10 POUNDS ON HIM.HE ALWAYS HAS FOOD IN HIS BOWL BUT HE HAS MAINTAINED THIS
WEIGHT FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO BREED HIM BEFORE HE GETS TO OLD, ANYONE KNOW OF SOMEWHERE IN EUROPE?
I DON'T THINK I WILL OWN ANOTHER BREED, ONCE YOU OWN A PYR ITS HARD TO IMAGINE OWNING
ANOTHER BREAD. THANKS.

Dear Ursla,
You have some very beautiful dogs and
your web site is a lot of fun to explore. It
must be wonderful to have so many Pyr's.
My wife and I are seriously considering
owning a Great Pyrenees. They appear
so regal and calm. We formerly had a
beautiful Golden Retreiver which lived
to the ripe old age of 15.
Happy New Year

My family and I are in the process of buying a home with a
very big beautiful backyard. I convinced my 4 year old son
that I was buying him a house so that he could have a puppy.
As a family we decided on the characteristics our new puppy
would need to have; gentle, playful, and cute-as-can-be.
We all agreed that we'd like to have a puppy that would
grow to be a larger dog (NO poodles for us). We also agreed
that we'd like a dog, that if trained properly, would
protect the family from strangers (primarily my son). After
doing quite a bit of research I believe we have narrowed our
search to the Great Pyrenees. I don't have a clue how to go
about trying to actually find one, so any advise would
certainly be welcome. We are all THRILLED at the
possibility of welcoming a new family member. My son was
given the honor of naming our future pup, even though he/she
isn't with us yet. My son thinks the name "Bafo" will be
appropriate. I'm not so sure, so I've asked him to wait
until we meet our new family member before making the final
decision. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read my
story, and thanks for the web site.
Warmest regards,
Shana Wallace

This is such a wonderful breed. I truly love this dog.
I have two small children ages 5 & 20 months.
I am getting a larger home with a very large yard this
summer coming. When this happens we will then get our
Great Pyrenees. We plan on calling him Hercules.
Are you aware of any breeders in the Colorado area that are
recomendable??

My husband and I just lost our first Pyr, Samantha, last week at the age of 4. We believe
that her death may have been caused by heart failure, but are looking into the cause
further. She was a beautiful, smart and large 100lb female. We have been beside ourselves
with grief and miss everything about her. She was the joy of our life. Thank you for your
web page - the stories have made me laugh and help me get through this rough time.
There is no question in our minds that we will get another pyr - we have already tried
calling the breeder where we got her because we want another one just like her. She was
the sweetest, most gentle and loveable "dog" - although she did not think of
herself as a "dog" at all. She was really part of our family. She loved hugs,
ham, and going places with us (especially camping in the mountains),. She greeted us with
cries of excitement each time we came in the door and slept on her bed at the foot of our
bed each night. In the winter she loved to spread out on the ice or snow and bathe in the
sun. She loved to play and dance with her "dad". She used to sit in the front
yard on Sunday mornings to greet all of her neighborhood friends (they all knew her) on
their way to church, and loved to bark ferociously at strangers who came near our house
(and occasionally chase the FedEx truck down the street!). We miss her terribly and go on
lonely walks without her. Rest in peace our beautiful Samantha. We miss you!

My husband and I would absolutely love to own a Pyr!! Could you please let me know of some
respectable places (or peoople) in my area from which we could adopt (or buy) one of these
wonderful dogs? We don't have any kids, yet--we want a Pyr first--are Pyr's good with new
babies entering their home? Also, we have a cat--would that be a problem for a Pyr? Please
let me know. Thanks

pyrs No, but hope to.
I first saw the Great Pyrenees in Idaho then Minnesota, both places have a much cooler
climate then Lousiana.
I would feel guilty to have one in the heat and humidity that we have, I think they would
suffer in the heat.
They are a wonderful breed.
Thanks for the visit, your site was very enjoyable.

Our family decided we wanted a puppy but could not agree on
the breed that would be best. When my 5 year old and I went
into a little home owned pet shop here in town we saw the
cutest puppy we had ever seen! We had never heard of this
breed before so we had to do some checking. I read several
books and called my "cousin the vet" to find out about their
dispositions since we have two children and are planning one
more. All the reports were correct. Home came "Cindy Lou"
(the girls named her after Cinderella) and you couldn't make
her be mean to anybody ( well maybe to her brother and sister
the cats).I couldn't ask for a better friend. She keeps me lots
of company. I would recommend this breed to anyone. She is
getting a little big to be sleeping in the bed with my husband
and I. The only problem I have is with her digging. Any
suggestions???

pyrs One female, 9 months old named Sally
We brought Sally (the Beast) home on June 19th, 1997. She was just 12 weeks old but
already weighed 32 pounds. Sally immediately developed a talent for creating new designer
shoes for every member of our family. Next, her instinct for new adventure took over. She
conducted several excavation digs - to China! (which resulted in having the Pyrenees
Mountains right in our own backyard)! Why hire a landscape architect when our puppy can do
it for free! By the time Sally was 5 months old she weighed 60 pounds. Taking her for
walks was becoming no small feat. I was being dragged ar!!
