pyrs Yes - AnnaBelle
I never thought I wanted anything to do with dogs after having several bad experiences quite a few years ago. After seeing a Pyr at the beach last year, I knew it was time to change my mind. Two weeks later we found AnnaBelle. She is so loving, gentle, sweet, and spoiled. She is such a great companion for my 10 year old daughter. We take her to the soccer park and she becomes the star of the park. I've had people tell me after an outing, "She really made my day!" She is so gentle with even the smallest child. As far as I am concerned, a Pyr is the only dog of choice. I want to have her spayed, but having one litter of puppies is so tempting. The joy of having a Pyr should be more available.

I have been an American Cocker Spaniel breeder/exhibitor for 15 years. Last year I received a Pyr puppy as a wedding present from one of my best friends from Costa Rica, who has been showing and breeding Pyrs for more than 10 years. Inmediately I fell in love with my tender, loving and intelligent baby, who has grown up to 30" and weighs 125 pounds, but still keeps his puppy ways and wonderful temperament. I did not a dog this large could be so delicate, he is my Cocker's best friend and protector. Besides, he has successfully begun his show career with a Best Puppy in Show his first time out, and even a Working Group 3 when he was only 13 months old. I am delighted with my white baby and enjoy everything he does. I am trying to learn as much as I can to give him proper care and condition. His name is Danny (Dan del Menthon), and he is the most wonderful dog in the whole world.

In September of 96, I went to the local animal control desperately looking for my cat. While I was there, a friend who volunteers at the shelter pulled me aside to "show me something."
There in a 6x8 kennel stood a massive mound of fur, with the dumbest look on his face. I had to laugh, but the humor faded when I saw the "red tag" attached his cage.
My heart sank.

My friend explained how the shelter had been trying to catch this dog for months, but now that he was there, no one came forward to claim him. The staff at the shelter went extra miles to find his family, but to no avail.. He had been put up over for adoption over 2 weeks ago, but with him being so large, they could'nt find any takers. If he did not find a home before closing, he would be put to sleep the next morning. It was 3pm. "Please Sandy," my friend begged "Dave won't mind."

Dave! My practical husband? Not mind taking Goliath into our home with 3 kids, 2 cats, and an overweight dog that already eats us out of house and home. "Look at him Sandy? I did, big mistake. "I have to talk to Dave" I told her, "you have 2 hours" she said " don't let me down."

As I drove to my husbands office, I contemplated my plan of action, what could I say to convince the man I love that we HAVE to bring home a 100lb dog. "He won't get in the way?" uhh..not likely. "You won't even notice he's there" yeh, what are the odds.
So there I stood, in front of Dave's desk. "PLEEEEESE honey" I begged. "How big is he?" he questioned, knowing full well I don't beg unless I'm in too deep. "Kinda big" I lied. Long pause....deep breathe....even longer pause. Shaking his head he handed me the checkbook. Dave may be practical, but he loves me. "I'm gonna need the van though" he said " you need to take my car." The car? the small car?? oops.
As I paid bail for our new family member, shouts of joy sounded through the walls. I was actually applauded for by the staff and visitors. The ride home caused quite a scene. My furry friend thought he could drive better, and offered, or should I say, demanded to take the wheel. It was a long trip home, and with stares, pointed fingers and hoots of laughter from passing cars, it was even longer.

Home at last, the kids jaws dropped. "1st rule of the house, do not ride the dog!" I said firmly. The phone rang, "so did you get him?" Dave asked "uh-huh" I replied "well as usual, you pick the animals..but I get to name them." Thats our arrangement, I get the pets, he picks their title. "I'm gonna name him Arlo" he decided "you have'nt even seen him, how can you name him?"...I looked down at the big lug.."never mind, he's definately an Arlo." When Dave came home the only words out of his mouth were "Sandy, thats a big dog."

As the days, weeks and months passed the adjustment went smoothly, well, for the most part. Arlo had to establish his dominance by herding the other animals around the back yard. Next it was the kids, though the clipping at their heels was not there idea of fun.
Of course, you could'nt have a male dog without having territory marking, Arlo wee-wee'd on every tree, bush and rock in both the front and back yard, twice. One day a field mouse was scurrying across the back yard, Arlo sprung into action, sniffed, pawed at it, and you guessed it, pee'd on it. It just was'nt that rodents day.

We also learned, that unlike Suzie (the other dog), we did'nt need to bother with closing doors so our shoes would'nt get chewed. Arlo just chewed the door.
Then there was the time with the christmas ham, but that's another story.
As time went on we found Arlo had a checkerd past. Neighbors recognized him from work sights where he used to hang around and beg for food. Waitresses who saw him at the shelter smiled with relief that somebody took him in. Arlo was quite the famous pooch.

Our stories about Arlo stretch for miles. I can't imagine our life without him. If I were to pick another pet, It would be a Great Pyrenees, and of course, Dave would name him.
P.S I'm glad I found your web-site. Having never seen
another Great Pyrenees I was'nt sure if Arlo was normal.
As I mentioned earlier, our other dog Suzie is overweight (full-figured to be politically correct) while Arlo is a little more lean. I've spent a year and a half trying to make 135lb dog into 175lb dog thinking he should be fatter because of his size. Looking at the show dogs, I've realized he's not suppose to be fat.

pyrs two females,Kiya and Ursa
Kiya and Ursa are sisters from two different litters. Their personalities are as different as day and night. Kiya is very reserved and a bit shy whereas Ursa is bold and brash. Ursa is a fair bit younger than Kiya but is the "boss" none the less. Pyrs are the finest breed of dog in the world and we are lucky to have two of them.

We are very proud and happy owners of a Great Pyrenees named, Rocky. He is a well loved member of our family.
I have never met a more loving dog in my life.At five years
old, and 85lbs. he still wants to climb up on my lap and would stay there all day if I let him.
The few times that he has gotten out of our yard and run off were very upsetting to the whole family. Our one son,
11 at the time, was really upset. When we talked to him about it he told us that the only thing that made him feel safe enough to come home alone after school was that Rock was there to protect him. That was when we really realized
just how important Rocky was to our family. As a mother I
can't think anything more important then knowing that my
children are safe ( and feel safe) when I cant be with them.
I would recamend a Great Pyr to any family looking for a
pet,friend and protecter.
Thanks for listening to me brag about my friend.

These two girls do not get along at all, will fight to the death so we have just become very accompodating owners and keep them separate. Any suggestions???? My trainer even says he's a one man show. I am hanging in there waiting for these puppy times to slow down and maybe he will be a gentle giant when he grows up. If anybody out there also has a hyper pyr. I would appreciate hearing from you. Dorothy

Jim & I have had Pyrs since 1977, and wouldn't have any other
breed. "Mounty", our first boy, convinced us that their
loyalty and intelligence went beyond that of any other breed.
When Mounty was 6 months old, he showed a sixth sence that to
this day I still have trouble believing. I had driven Jim into
work on nightshift, and on the way home noticed a car following
me. I made many unnecessary turns trying to loose this car, but
couldn't. I was scared and didn't know what to do. Finally, I
decided to go home and phone the police. When I pulled into
our driveway, the other car stopped at the end of the drive.
It was then that I noticed Mounty lunging at the front door window
with his teeth bared and growling and barking. He had never
demonstrated such behaviour before (or ever again). At the
sight of this huge white giant, the occupants of the other car\
took off. I don't know how Mounty "knew" I was in trouble,
but he seemed to really sence it. It might have been coincidence,
but, his behaviour convinced us of his loyalty and love. We
have tried to return that love over the years with all our
beloved pyrs.

My family has a 5 1/2 year old male. He is a wonderful dog. It was my father's idea to get one and at first my mother and I didn't want that large of a dog, but we fell in love with them. We have three other dogs as well as four cats. Generally "Bear" gets along well with them. We have found them to be a very intelligent breed, in fact they are sometimes too smart for their own good. My favorite "Bear" story is when I took him to an obedience class, how he would not let me put him on a sit/stay while he was on a leash, in order to get him to do a sit/stay I had to take his leash off. We highly recommend them to anyone that wants a "gentle Giant".

I have a dream!! My two Pyrs, Cody and Dillon, and myself have been touring North America for the last year. Both great hikers and climbers, we have visited and hiked North America from Florida to Alaska, including a " side trip " to the Arctic Ocean. They occupy my Toyota 4Runner, purchased specifically for them, and I occupy my new Airstream Trailer. We have climbed many places, sometimes 3,500 feet each way in a day. The boys have encountered thousands of wild animals and are always respectfully and joyfully curious. Other than one skunking--yeah, both of them got it--we have had great experiences since early 1997.
Now, I want to begin a six month tour around the world, but I will not take the boys. I want to locate a loving home in a cool to colder environment to care for them at my cost during my absence. I will travel anywhere in North America to deliver them to a good home, and I am ready to to do so now!
I will pay all expenses! They are 6 year old neutered males, typical lovers. If not for you, anyone else " fit the bill?"

I was recently over in the UK and was surprised to see that the Pyr's over there had less coat than my dogs and it was the middle of winter there and here my pyr's endure 30+ temps daily yet have more coat??
I have never owned any other breeds of dogs and i often say that i am spoiled from owning a Pyrenean, they truely are a great breed!

My husband and I purchased a Pyrenees in 1995. Convinced this was one of the greatest dogs we had ever known, our affections grew daily. We found out when Roscoe went lame at 9 mos. old that he basically had no hips. We took him to Auburn Univ. and had a new surgery performed by Dr. Ron Montgomery. This new procedure was called a TPO. Using his own pelvic bones they made a hip socket. Now 2 years later as we watch him run across the front of our 18 acres this was the best money we could have spent. The heartache of buying a puppy like this has taught us one thing. I will never purchase a puppy again that does not come from hip certified parents.

I have a 3 year old female. Her name is Kirra.
She is the best dog except for ALL the hair. I also
have a 11 month old daughter, Taylor, and they are the best of
friends. Taylor will pull her hair and love all over her face
and Kirra just sits there. She is is a perfect example of
the "gentle giant." Like I said earlier the hair is all over and
Taylor loves to find it and eat it. Such fun!!!!

SHEP, is my Pry. Male is about 4.5 yrs old. He was a stray and was kept by a neighbor who rents a cabin near Lake Texoma for a year in the woodsy area, near our weekend cabin. The neighbor had to move so he gave me this beautiful dog, a breeds I had never really seen. We live in a suburban area near Dallas, but Shep who I "rescued" 2 years ago(Feb 1995)has grown accustomed to the surburban life. I do take him for at least 2 long walks everyday rain or sleet or heat. He enjoys the trails near the creeks, all the bushes and searching for mice, squirrels and ducks. In the yard he is content to sun in the yard or on the patio, as wlong as he knows he's going for a ride in the car or another walk. When groomed he always raises eyebrows from other walkers with their small dogs. He never barks or growls and loves little children, our 3 grandkids too. People always stop and ask "What breed...I have never seen such a beautiful dog."
He is patient in the morning while I help my disabled wife get up, and waits until it time to go out. He loves to sit on my big leather footstool and move his great rearend onto my lap. His favorite idae of fun is at the lake cabin running loose and catching the scent of deer or rabbits. Shep is a pure joy and delight, after having smaller dogs many years ago. I would enjoy hearing by email from other Pry owners in the greater Dallas area, or from anywhere.

pyrs Yes, His name is Samson
In September 1997, my husband, Chris, saw an ad in the paper for a 135 lbs. sheepdog. He had always wanted a dog. It being big was just icing on the cake. Chris drove 200km from our home to pick up this "sheepdog". His name was Sam. We renamed him Samson due to his massive size and good temperment. I told Chris that Samson did not look like a sheepdog. Our dog groomer, Wee Acres Kennels, said that Samson looked like a cross between a sheepdog and wolfhound. We accepted this explanation. It was not until Chris was watching the dog show on TV that we found out Samson's true breed. I was upstairs working on my computer when Chris ran up to tell me that he saw a dog identical to Samson on the dog show. He said that it was a Great Plains breed. Eager to learn more about Samson's lineage, I log onto the Internet. In my search engine I typed the phrase "Great Plains, dog". To my surprise only one match returned. I double clicked on the Web address. As the home page unfolded, I could not believe my eyes. I was staring at a twin to our Samson. I was on the Schenee Bar of the Great Plains homepage. This is where I learned that our beloved Samson was a Great Pyrenees. I was and am so happy that Chris had been watching the dog show that night. It is now with pride that I tell everyone that Samson is a Great Pyrenees.

My son and daughter-in-law rescued their Great Pyrenees, Harry, about 7 mos ago. He is not yet 3 years old. When they adopted him they were told that he would not climb stairs-he had a phobia about it. My son worked with Harry and he now has no problems with climbing stairs, and will go up or down with no problem. They have another problem though, in that he does not let them know when he has to "do his business". He will defecate anywhere, indoors or out. They've tried changing feeding times, taking him outside constantly to his "spot", asking him if he needs to go out, etc., to no avail. They love him dearly, as does my 3 year old granddaughter. It's just discouraging that they can't find a solution to this problem. Have any of your guests had a similar problem with their GPs? Any advice would be very much appreciated. It's wonderful to see how much these dogs are loved by their owners. We have a Norwegian Elkhound, whom we love dearly, but after hearing about (and seeing Harry) we would really like to have one as part of our family some day. Thank you.

pyrs 1 seven week old male named eiger
i'm glad i found this site(don't know my way around the net
yet). this looks like a place where i could probably get
some good advise regaurding my great pyreneese puppy. he is
seven weeks old and our entire family has just fallen in
love with this pup (except maybe the two cats, but they will
come around, they have always been around dogs). this pup
has shown some aggressive behavior, minor now, but i want it
stopped before it gets to be a problem. i sure hope someone
out there has some advice. here is an example of this
situation: we are crate training and his "free play time" is
in a large kitchen area where we can close it off from the
rest of the house. well i didn't know that someone had put
the cat's food back into the kitchen area and of course the
puppy found it. when i tried to take the cat's food away
he wrinkled his nose revealing his teeth, and came after me
growling! it really upsets me. i just love this dog but i
cann't have this behavior. i do have three children: twins7,
and one 8, all three boys. they have been born and raised
around animals. they have been very good with the pup and
vice versa. there has been no aggressisve "play" behavior
from either the pup or the boys. this is always monitered
by an adult. in fact there is quite a mutual attachment
between pup and boys. these aggressive "outbursts" have
always been triggered by something such as the cat's food.
this was an example of the most extreme incident to date.
we did a lot of reading and research before we got the puppy
and thought it to be the dog for us, especially because of
the breed's gentle ways. please help if you can!! we all
want this puppy to work!!! thanks

pyrs yes, 1 female, Jenna , 4 mos
I rescued Jenna when she was 8 weeks old. She quite obviously had a problem with her eyes. She had a condition that was common in chows and sharpei's. She had to have her eyes tacked because the lids had turned to the inside of her eyes. Last week we discovered that she now has a new problem. She has some eye lashes growing inside her eyes and needs electrolosis to remove them. Aside from these medical problems she is the sweetest dog I've encountered.
I've raised a pry that is now 9 yrs. old and lives in KC with my ex inlaws. Her name is Halley. She has very light grey markings on her face and at the base of her tail. Her father, Casper, was pure white. Halley is a runt and has never weighed more than 75 lbs. Jenna will outweigh Halley by a lot I'm afraid. Jenna is the first Pry I've ever seen that has Black markings. Has anyone else seen a Pyr with black markings on face and at the base of tail? She is a great beauty.

We aquired a 4 month old male from a family who purchased 2 pups with intentions to sell one after the personality developed more. They chose to keep the more dependant one. Ours was so great, but He ate many video tapes and books, and he was moma's boy, so my things were the first to be taken out the dog doors when I was away too long for his taste. He is now 2 years old, 120 lbs, and his back is about 34 inches high. His tail is always up, and he's a big fluff ball. This week we rescued a 5 year old female from a family who abandoned her to the back yard alone, with once a week check-up for cleanup and feeding/watering, and subjected to a shock collar among who knows what else. She's not house trained, but with our other 4 dogs and dog doors, she should conquer that shortly. She hasn't barked and its been 3 days now. She just looks in horror and amazement as our others do their fair share of guarding the homestead in a subdivision. She seems happier already, getting to be an active part in our lives, go for walks, and sleep among her new "pack" who has accepted her amazingly well, even our fox terrier who is a #1 brat to other dogs, esp. females. It has brought us to a new point in our lives that we will use modern resources to resupply our dog family as openings come available when one passes on to bring a dog into our home that is in need of a better life. I was amazed to see the number of great dogs rejected by those who thought they had to have one of this or that and then was dissatisfied in the end. Our other dog is a JRT and is so devoted and not the typical charateristic of mischief of a JRT that I'll never find another like her. I'm looking for someone to chat with or e-mail with on the JRT's or Great Pyre's, and the corgi's and Bernese mtn dogs. I enjoy these guestbooks.

Frosty came to live with us late last year thru adoption....he is just over 1 year old. His first owners just couldn't deal with him.
We have lots of land for him to roam and take care of.....and after he had trained us for 3 months, we get along just fine.
He punches a time clock about sundown and works thru the night taking care of the farm......I use ear plugs on the nights the moon is full........!!
These are marvelous dogs, but misunderstood.....they need to be researched before becoming a pet.
He's very special to me and we have developed quite a bond....he is always with me when I am working..we have horses and his instincts with them are amazing, he walks around them very quietly and never makes any quick movements.
Thank you for your interesting articles, I have learned so much from this site, and it helped me to understand that BIG WHITE PRINCE laying on the porch.

These have to be, without a doubt, the most mild mannered dogs on this planet. Would not hesitate to recommend one to own anytime.

I found Sheba quite by accident, or perhaps by destiny. I had gone to the Humane Society looking for a stray cat that had wandered into my life for a few days and then wandered away again. I did not find the cat, but I did find Sheba.
Her coat was matted with mud, but I was sure there was a Pyr under there. She was about 6 months, 80lbs and completely untrained. She became more than I ever could have hoped for in a companion. She stayed with me for 8 years, 9 months and 4 days - far too little time. She left me Friday March 27, 1998. I know that if she knew the pain her leaving would bring me she would have lived forever.
She had lived with Thyroid medication for years, and survived surgery to remove tumors last June. Her hair had been falling out for the last year. But I had no idea her time was so short. She was happy, healthy, eager to learn and full of life to the end.
Please hug and love your Pyr for me, and for yourself. The care and love you give now become the memories that will comfort you when your companion's time comes.

AS A KID GROWING UP I'VE ALWAYS HAD MEDIUM SIZED DOGS. JASON INSISTED WHEN
WE WERE TO GET A DOG IT HAD TO BE A LARGE BREED. AFTER A LOT OF RESEARCHING
WE FOUND THE LOVE OF OUR LIVES, GABBY. SHE'S ALMOST A YEAR OLD AND STILL
THINKS SHE'S A LAP DOG AS WELL AS A HUMAN BEING. I AM SO GLAD JASON
CONVINCED ME TO GET A PYR.

Hey there--
Went into this site to get additional information on the Pyrenees. I really want to get a puppy, but there haven't been any in the paper. Not sure how to find a breeder in this area. It's a wonderful source of information.
Thanks--

As 1st time Pyr owner, I found your sight very informative.
I am somewhat concerned over several articles I have seen on temperment, though I have not noticed any problems. My Pyr pup lives with 3 rollicking Irish Setters so hopefully their good nature will set him a good example.
Thanks for the info - your site is beautiful!

I would like to know about the value of assigning a "show" type name to our dog. He is basically the family pet, so I let my 5 and 3 year daughters name him. We have his AKC papers, but haven't sent them in yet. Would it hurt his use for possible breeding with a name that is simply "Beethoven"? Any responces would be appreciated since we are about to send his registration. Thanks.

Looks like a great page. We have gotten our latest Great Pyr this past fall. He is 6 months old now and is doing great. He is trying to replace a dear lost great pyr named sammy. Lost to a kidney infection 2 years ago this spring. We bought our first dog with the birth of our first daughter and have now purchased this second one with the birth of our second daughter. It is so great to see them grow up together. We will always miss our first, but this one is filling the void quite will with our family. They are the greatest dogs......Thanks for listenning..Jack

For thirteen years we had a male pyrenee. He's been dead now for almost a year and we still miss him.
Boris was very nice to our children but sometimes not so nice for me. We are now actually looking for a new pyrenee.

pyrs Yes, Goliath, 14 yrs old July 4th, my best friend.
I love my dog and the breed. Goliath is an excellent Pyr, good working dog (he works mostly in his dreams now, judging by the leg and lip action when he sleeps, he works a great deal in his dreams!) He has been extreemly faithful, protective and an eager worker! But I suppose this comes as no suprise to any of you!
Would love to hear from anyone regarding the breed, this part of PA limits my exposure to other owners and the only other exposure to the breed is what I read.
Thanks, Matt

My Harley came to me from a rescue league up here in Maine. He is the best friend I could ever want. He is a clown when I need a laugh and sympathetic after a long day at work. He speaks with his eyes. He was abused in his past life and has nerve damage and big lumps on his skull. I have had him two years and in that time he has blossomed before my eyes. I am proud and honored to say that he trusts me completely (and I trust him completely). He is my second pyr. I still haven't gotten over the loss of my ffirst, who died of cancer ove two years ago, but I don't think I ever will. But everyday I feel fortunate to be able to share my life with such wonderful creatures.

We had a red female Doberman. She died four months ago. She was a wonderful dog. A very good watch dog and a lovable family dog. I saw an add for Great Pyrennes puppies for $350 each. I don't know much about this bread and I wonder if it would make a good watch dog and a good family dog. We currently have a four month old female Chihuahua inside. Also, do the Great Pyrennes drool.

We have a Pyr who is 2 years old and we just love him to pieces. He is a house dog and loves to be around people. We have never had any trouble with his temper. We also have a seven month old son who is now beginning to to crawl and explore. He really likes our dog, Dakota, and wants to play with him and pull on his fur. Do we have anything to worry about? I know all dogs are different but I was just curious about the temperment with young children.
We are also getting redy to move to a new house and Dakota will be staying in the basement during the day when we are off to work. Right now he stays in the garage and has a tendency to go to the bathroom while staying there. I don't want him to so this in our basement at the new house house. Any suggestions?
Thank you so much!
Jennifer

pyrs Yes, one. Just got him.
Don't have much of a story...yet! When we do -- sure.
comments: We'd like to know more about "Pyrs". We just got ours as a predator controller for our sheep. The only problem is, he appears to be afraid of sheep! He's not neutered, 10 months old and very friendly to people and other dogs -- just not sheep. He isn't TOO afraid of lambs, but more than 3 of them and he's gone! Can someone tell us if he will grow to like the sheep? What, exactly, is he supposed to do to control coyotes?(Right now he runs all over the place barking his head off all night long. Is this normal? We look forward to getting some answers. (P.S. We call him "Casper" for the cartoon ghost character. He's a friendly ghost that scares easily.)
